54mm Gladiators for Victus gaming
We have an upcoming game of Gladiators coming up so I dug out my 54mm miniatures.
The majority of these were sculpted by Aaron Brown under the company he ran, Alpha Miniatures. Sadly I believe these are now out of production.
Roman gladiator fights were highly stylized and ritualistic, not the wild scrums showed in many movies. Fighters fought in a specific category with a set of predefined tools of the trade.
Here is a Myrmillo, often considered a "hero" of the arena. They fought with a gladius and scutum wearing protective armor.
The main opponent of a Myrmillo was typically a Thraex, noted for their sica, a curved blade designed to get past the scutum of the Myrmillo.
Here is a Provocator (Challenger), another archetype known for heavy armor. Another piece of gear that was unique to them were the cardiophylax, a breast plate to protect the heart.
The traditional opponent of a Provocator was another Provocator.
Here is a dual gladius wielding Dimachaerus gladiator of Celtic origin.
The Dimachaerus fought with virtually no armor and were a rarity in the arena. Typically they fought dimachaeri, or acted as a wildcard against heavily armored opponents like the Hoplomachus, Myrmillo or Provocator.
More to come,
Doc
