Blood & Plunder: The Bloody Battle for the Spanish Plantation!

Six turns. Four players. Two opposing forces. One Spanish plantation that had to be held at all costs.

In this battle report, I take you onto the tabletop for a game of Blood & Plunder, the historical skirmish game of black powder warfare from the same publisher behind Blood & Plunder and Oak & Iron. Our scenario saw two players commanding English raiders attempting to capture a Spanish plantation within six turns, while two players took command of the Spanish militia tasked with driving them back.

I played on the Spanish side, commanding militia supported by a force of Caribbean fighters.

Each player controlled roughly 20 miniatures, making this a manageable but still substantial skirmish. The battlefield quickly became a bloody mix of black powder rifle fire, charges, close combat, and desperate fighting around the plantation itself.

One of the mechanics I particularly enjoyed was Blood & Plunder's card-based activation system. The cards create uncertainty over when forces will activate and can stagger the number of activations each player receives during a turn. They also provide a simple and effective way to keep track of the turn sequence, making the system feel very fluid during play.

Compared with our previous games of Port Royal, I found Blood & Plunder to be a much more decisive skirmish experience. Units can suffer serious consequences from concentrated fire or a well-timed charge, and once the fighting reaches melee range, things can deteriorate very quickly.

The English managed to push toward the plantation, but the Spanish defense held. As the battle progressed, the English attack began to collapse, eventually leaving their remaining forces attempting to flee the battlefield.

By the end of the sixth turn, the plantation was still in Spanish hands.

The English forces had been routed, while some unfortunate survivors found themselves trapped in the plantation's stairwells, where the final stages of the battle turned into deadly hand-to-hand combat.
